You’re willing to try just about anything when you’re losing your hair. From varieties of shampoos, conditioners, serums, and salon treatments. We neglect the concept of oiling which is the main ingredient of our traditional hair care culture, passed on from our ancestors. Moreover, essential oils have a fairly low entrance barrier because they are natural, reasonably priced, and have a pleasant scent.

Nevertheless, are they successful in treating hair loss? There is currently a dearth of scientific studies on essential oils and their impact on hair growth, with the majority of studies being of modest size and lacking in depth. Yet, despite these studies’ limits, some of them imply that a few essential oils might have advantages for blood circulation, healthy hair growth, and remedies for widespread issues including rough hair texture.

The definition of essential oils and the most recent studies on essential oils and healthy hair follicles are described below.

Essential oil

Essential oil is made up of chemical components from plants that are volatile. It’s a concentrated hydrophobic liquid and the fragrance & health benefits of the plant from which it is derived are contained in it, making it important in the sense that it contains the essence of the plant’s fragrance & values. Essential oil has a unique chemical composition that influences how the oils function in or on your body.

A plant’s essential oil can come from its flowers, leaves, bark, or roots, and the various sources of oil may influence its properties.

Essential oils are used in several things such as perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, air fresheners, and other products, and also for flavoring food and beverages and to scent incense and domestic cleaning products.

Essential oils have healing properties that make them even more medicinal and are used in Aromatherapy, a type of alternative medicine in which aromatic substances are thought to have healing properties.

Likewise, a few essential oils work like a magical wand on our hair. They help hair growth, repair damage, improve scalp health, and improve the texture of hair which are the root cause of unhealthy hair.

Research & Study on essential oils

In 1998 research, appearing in the Archives of Dermatology, examined the use of a concoction of essential oils in the treatment of alopecia areata, a condition that causes patchy bald patches to appear on the scalp and/or face. It took several months to complete the procedure which included controlled research with 86 patients. The control group only used carrier oils, while half of the group massaged a mixture of thyme, rosemary, cedarwood, and lavender essential oils into their hair each day.

Compared to the control group, which included only 15% of participants, 44% of those who used essential oil treatments reportedly experienced improvement during the study time. Later research focused on the effects of rosemary oil on androgenetic alopecia, or male pattern baldness, and this study was published in the journal in 2015.

The essential oil and minoxidil, one of only two medications authorized by the FDA to treat male pattern hair loss, were compared by the researchers. 50 study subjects used rosemary oil and 50 used minoxidil. When compared to the start of the trial, both groups had “significant increases in hair count” at the 6-month point.

Essential oil formation

Typically, essential oils are removed through distillation, frequently with the help of steam. The majority of popular essential oils are extracted, including eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint, tea tree oil, patchouli, and peppermint. Flowers, leaves, wood, bark, roots, peel, and other raw plant material are placed in an alembic (a distillation device) over water. The volatile chemicals are vaporized as the water is heated and the steam moves through the plant matter. The receiving receptacle is filled with the liquid that was previously condensed from the vapors as they passed through a coil.

How Essential Oils Transform Your Hair Health

The usage of the right oils includes the fact that they are absorbed by the hair, moisturizing it, making it more pliable and less prone to breakage. Its advantageous properties help in achieving natural shine, soothing the scalp, restoring moisture in the cuticle, or eliminating frizz completely depending on the hair and suitable oil type.

Consider beginning with one of the following oils if interested in experimenting with essential oils for your hair’s health and appearance.

1. COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil is easily available and it’s kind of traditional as it’s a very old & common component of hair masks used in our household. But it isn’t typically associated with any enhancements in hair development. However, the study indicates that it might prevent protein loss, a frequent problem that can harm hair. It softens the hair and gives the needed shine, encouraging stronger, thicker hair. By adding a few drops to your preferred shampoo or conditioner, you can easily incorporate coconut oil into your hair care regimen, just like you can with rosemary oil.

2. LAVENDER OIL

Essential oil has all the benefits of lavender from its texture to fragrance. It is one of the most well-liked essential oils and is connected to a number of advantages for hair. According to studies & research applying lavender oil may encourage the development of new hair follicles and heighten follicular depth thus accelerating hair development.

It also has antimicrobial and antibacterial qualities that may benefit scalp health. Apply several drops of lavender oil to your hair after mixing 3 tablespoons of carrier oil, such as olive oil or melted coconut oil. Allow at least 10 minutes before rinsing and shampooing as usual. You can do this several times per week.

3. PEPPERMINT OIL

Peppermint oil has been linked to increased hair development as per research. The Toxicology Research discovered that it increases dermal thickness and follicle growth.

When applied to the affected region, peppermint oil can cause a cold, tingling sensation.

During the growing phase, this can help stimulate hair growth. Combine 2 droplets of peppermint essential oil with your preferred carrier oil. Massage it into your scalp for 5 minutes before completely cleansing it with shampoo and conditioner.

4. ROSEMARY ESSENTIAL OIL

Rosemary oil is another famous essential oil for treating hair loss. A study published in the journal Skinmed discovered that individuals experiencing hair loss experienced an increase in hair count after using rosemary oil for six months. You can easily incorporate rosemary oil into your hair care regimen by adding one or two drops to your favorite hair products. Because of its ability to improve cellular generation, rosemary oil is an excellent option for improving both hair thickness and hair growth. Apply a few drops of rosemary oil to your hair with olive or coconut oil. Allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes before rinsing it with detergent. For best outcomes, repeat this process twice per week.

5. TEA TREE OIL

Tea tree oil is a common ingredient in anti-dandruff shampoos, and there is some proof that it may aid in hair growth. The research discovered that it may improve the effects of minoxidil, a common hair loss treatment, and also has positive effects on skin blood flow, which may be beneficial in supplying nutrients to your hair follicles. Tea tree oil has antibacterial, antimicrobial, and cleansing qualities.

Tea tree oils come in a variety of concentrations, some are extremely concentrated essential oils, while others are creams or oils. Use 10 drops of tea tree essential oil in your shampoo or conditioner on a regular basis. Alternatively, combine 3 drops with 2 tablespoons of carrier oil and keep it on for 15 minutes before rinsing.
